Fourth Cairo Water Week – Closure Event Cairo, 28 October 2021 | Ambassador Christian Berger Head of the EU Delegation in Egypt.
First, let me congratulate H.E. Minister Abdel Atty on the outstanding success of the 4th Cairo Water Week. I would like also to thank all the participants and the staff working behind the scenes. Thanks to their commitment and dedication, in such difficult times, and adapting to the new circumstances, being able to manage numerous meetings in hybrid structure. A big thanks too, to all the water experts who joined physically or virtually, and invested their time to learn and to spread their knowledge.
Water scarcity is a global challenge, but is particularly pressing in the Mediterranean region which is among the world’s most water-scarce region, particularly in its southern Mediterranean and south-eastern European countries. The Mediterranean region holds only 3% of global water resources but hosts over 50% of the world’s water poor populations. In the Middle East and North Africa region, 60%of the population live in areas of high or very high water-stress, compared to the global average of 35%. All countries around the Mediterranean are concerned about water conservation and fair distribution.
